Collection Description

Collection name Carl Newton collection: Court Orchestra from Vienna (1895)
Unique identifier Mus. 319 c.6
Description A collection of handbills for afternoon and evening performances given by Eduard Strauss and the Court Orchestra from Vienna at the Imperial Institute, London on 13, 18, 25 and 31 May, 1, 3, 7, 11, 13, 15, 18, 21, 22, 26, 28 and 29 June, 1, 3, 6, 9, 11-13, 15, 18-20, 23, 27 and 29-31 July, and 1-3 and 5-9 August 1895, held as a bound volume.

The volume begins with an introductory announcement, claiming that 'the programmes … include overtures and selections from some thirty operas by the most famous composers; concert-compositions by Gounod, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Moszkowski, Rossini, Wagner, Beethoven, Mozart, Tschaikowski [sic], Schubert, and Schumann, and Sullivan and other British composers, &c.; songs specially orchestrated by Herr Strauss, &c.' This statement also provides information about tickets and includes a seating plan for the venue.

For concerts given between 18 May and 7 June and on 5 August, separate handbills are held for the afternoon and evening performances. On all other dates, a single document contains programmes for both performances. Where two handbills are held for the same date, the programmes are given in both German and English and include (on the reverse) a Programme of Musical and other Arrangements for the Day.

The documentation for 3 July – a Reception to His Highness the Shahzada Nazrullah Khan – consists not of a handbill but of a single-sheet programme book. Information regarding the 3 June and 5 August also incorporates programmes for performances given by the Royal Hungarian Band. There are two handbills for 15 July, containing different programmes for the afternoon and evening concerts.
