Description
A bound volume containing a prospectus (with programmes) for the Birmingham Musical Festival of 7–10 October 1823, conducted by Thomas Greatroex. Also, individual programmes with words for the Second Grand Miscellaneous Concert given at the Theatre on 8 October (evening) and Handel, Messiah, given at St. Philip's Church on 9 October (morning).
The prospectus includes a list of the orchestral ensemble and cites the involvement of the following vocal soloists: Madame Catalani, Mrs Salmon and Miss Stephens; Miss Travis, Miss Symonds, Miss Fletcher, Miss Heaton; Mr Braham and Mr Vaughan; Signor Placci, Messrs Evans, Golding, Whall, T. Greatorex, Gattie, Blackbourne and Thorne; and Mr Knyvett and Mr Bellamy.
This programme for the concert on the 9th October includes a number of handwritten annotations. They provide some observations on the nature and standard of the performance (particularly as regards Catalani) and record the performance of certain encores.
Playbills for two concerts are also included. One for a series of benefit concerts for the General Hospital at the Birmingham Musical Festival, on Oct 7, 8, 9, and 10 1823 (including that described above). These provide supplementary details, including of the members of the orchestra. The other playbill is for Cathedral services at St. Philip's Church, Oct 7, 8, and 10, but includes a brief mention of the performance of the Messiah described above.
