Description
An incomplete set of programmes with words for the Birmingham Musical Association Saturday Evening Popular Concerts, given at the Town Hall, Birmingham between 27 November 1880 (no.13) and 5 March 1887 (no.168), arranged chronologically within a bound volume.
Unless otherwise stated below, the concerts featured the band of the Birmingham Musical Association, conducted by Mr C.J. Stevens (16 April 1881 and 25 November 1882–6 March 1886) and Mr George Halford (from 20 November 1886). The concert on 17 December 1881 and those from 3 March 1883 to 3 April 1886 all featured Mr J. Stimpson (organ). Conductors of the earlier concerts are listed below, along with the vocal and instrumental soloists.
Where no other indication is given below, these were two-part concerts of vocal and orchestral music with some instrumental solos. The programmes for 26 March 1881, 4 February and 25 November 1882 and 3 March and 1 December 1883 carry brief historical and descriptive notes by Andrew Deakin.
27 November 1880 (no.13): including A. Romberg, Lay of the Bell (cantata), given by Mrs Titterton, Miss Sincock, Mr W. Young, Mr A.R. Hulme and Mr Horrex (vocal) with Mr F. Ward (violin), Mr Owen (cello) and Miss Hiley (piano), accompanied by Mr E.J. Turner and conducted by Mr T.G. Locker [40].
26 March 1881 (no.45): Band of the Edgbaston Amateur Musical Union with Miss Myra Young and Mr W. Lee Mathews (vocal), accompanied by Mr W. Astley Langston and conducted by Mr C.J. Duchemin [41].
9 April 1881 (no.47): including Gounod, Messe Solennelle, given by Miss Lizzie Preston, Miss Sincock, Mr C.B. Bragg and Mr John Dale (vocal), with Mr F. Ward (violin), Mr D. Ffrench Davis (harp), Mr J. Owen (cello) and Miss Hiley (piano), accompanied by Mr E.J. Turner and conducted by Mr T.G. Locker (2 copies) [42 and 43].
16 April 1881 (no.48): George Fox, The Jackdaw of Rheims, given by the Handsworth Philharmonic Society with Miss Blanthorne, Master Philip Muntz, Mr J.M. Crow and Mr J. Avery (vocal) and Mr F. Ward (violin), accompanied by Mr A. Wyatt Mortimer [44].
