Description A miscellaneous collection of posters, handbills and programmes for performances given in Banbury between 1847 and 1901, including extended sequences of programmes for the Banbury Amateur Musical Union, Banbury Choral Society and the Banbury Philharmonic Society.

Also held are posters/handbills for a Sacred Harmonic Society performance of Mendelssohn, Elijah given on 16/23 April 1847 at the Exeter Hall, London [64] and for a Grand Miscellaneous Concert given by Jenny Lind at the Theatre, Oxford on 1 December 1847 [65].

These items have been mounted on cards. These have been paginated though not bound: the numbering is preserved in square brackets below. In addition to the programmes listed below, page 46 contains a miscellaneous selection of tickets for the Banbury Philharmonic Society (1874-83).

1. Banbury Amateur Musical Union

2. Banbury Choral Society
Where no other indication is given below, performances were given at the Town Hall, Banbury and were conducted by Mr J. Thomson (November 1859?February 1860), Mr J. W. Elliott (April 1860?April 1862), Mr J. S. Wells (December 1862?May 1864) and Messrs Wells and Spinney (December 1864?April 1865). Many of the performances were given with assistance of members of the Banbury Philharmonic Society.

3. Banbury Philharmonic Society
A miscellaneous selection of handbills and programmes for the period 1854?1882 and a largely complete sequence of prospectuses and programmes for the seasons 1890-91 to 1893-94 and 1898?99 to 1900?01, with a single programme from 1908.
Unless otherwise stated below, performances were given at the Exchange Hall, Banbury and were conducted by Mr O. S. Marshall (December 1890?July 1894) and Mr W. L. Luttman (from December 1898). The prospectuses typically include lists of the Subscribers to the concert and lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles. Where no other indication is given, the performers listed are the vocal soloists. From the 1898-99 season, programmes, where these are held, include words and lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles.
