Collection Description

Collection name Banbury and District Music Society (1919-85)
Unique identifier O7
Description A largely complete set of programmes for the performances given by the Banbury and District Musical Society between 1919 and 1985, contained within the archives of the Society acquired by Oxfordshire Archives via Banbury Museum in November 1993.

This Society was founded in 1919 with the aim of providing concerts for the people of Banbury. Except for a gap during the Second World War (December 1938-October 1946), the Society was in continuous existence until the late 1980s.

Concerts were given at local venues in Banbury, principally the Church House and Town Hall. From the very earliest years, the Society engaged a large number of high-profile professional musicians.

In addition to the programmes, the archives at the Oxfordshire Record Office contain financial documents and material concerning the administration of the Society, including minute books.
