Description
A prospectus, with preliminary programmes, for the four performances given at the Ballet Club Theatre, 2 Ladbroke Road, London on 6 November and 11 December [1933] and 22 January and 26 February [1934] as the third series of Macnaghten-Lemare Concerts.
This document consists of single double-sided sheet, with information regarding performers on the front and the preliminary programmes on the reverse.
Performers:
Macnaghten String Quartet (Anne Macnaghten, Beryl Scawen Blunt, Elise Desprez and Mary Goodchild), Helen Perkin (piano), John Francis (flute), Steuart Wilson (tenor) and Sylvia Spencer and Evelyn Rothwell (oboe), conducted by Iris Lemare.
Programmes:
These were chamber music concerts, with programmes consisting ‘mainly of works by young English composers’, including a large number of first performances (listed below).
6 November 1933: Elizabeth Maconchy, String quartet and Grace Williams, Sonatina for Flute and Piano.
11 December 1933: John Sykes, ‘Litanie’ for double Chorus (words by John Donne); Elizabeth Maconchy, Two motets for double Chorus (words by John Donne); Gordon Jacob, Three Inventions for Flute and Oboe; and Benjamin Britten, String Quartet: Alla Quartetto Serioso (‘Go play, boy, play’).
22 January 1934: Dorothy Gow, Three Songs for Tenor and String Quartet; Frederick May, Four Songs for Tenor, String Quartet and Piano; and Alan Rawsthorne, String Quartet.
26 February 1934: Dorothy Gow, Prelude and Fugue for Chamber Orchestra; John Locke, Quintet for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Violin and Cello; Gordon Jacob, Concerto for Oboe and Strings; and Christian Darnton, Sinfonietta for Chamber Orchestra.
