Collection name Ballad Concerts (1899-90)
Unique identifier c.375. (4.)
Description The programmes and wordbooks for the first and sixth Ballad Concerts of the 1899-90 season, given at St. James's Hall, London on 1 November 1899 and 7 February 1900, under the direction of William Boosey.

These were predominantly vocal concerts, with occasional orchestral repertory performed by the Ivan Caryll Orchestra, including the works cited below.

Both programmes provide detailed information regarding the performers (including a list of the orchestral ensemble) and carry an advertisement for the next performance in the series. That for 1899 carries a single handwritten annotation indicating the performance of an encore.

1 November 1899: Misses Hilda and Miss Muriel Foster, Mr Ben Davies, Mlle Leclerc, Mr Kennerley Rumford, Mme Alice Gomez, Mrs Beerbohm Tree and Mr Maurice Farkoa (vocal), including the first English performance of Massenet, Parade Militire.

7 February 1890: Miss Hortense Paulsen, Mr Watkin Mills, Miss Marie Tempest, Madame Alice Gomez, Mr Ley Vernon and Miss Hilda Foster (vocal), including the first performance of Paul Lacome, Suite d’Orchestre. The concert also included a solo piano piece played by Mlle Chaminade.
