Description A complete set of programmes for the second season of Balfour Gardiner Choral and Orchestral Concerts, given on 11 and 25 February and 4 and 18 March 1913 at the Queen’s Hall, Langham Place, London.

All concerts featured the New Symphony Orchestra, in combination with the various choral groups and instrumental soloists listed below. The series included the first performance of a significant number of works.

Programmes for the first three concerts provide the text for the vocal pieces and some brief descriptive notes. That for the final concert includes some more extensive historical notes.

11 February 1913: Oriana Madrigal Society (conducted by Mr Charles Kennedy Scott), with Miss Beatrice Hughes-Pope, Mr Alonzo Thorogood, Miss Winifred Williamson and Mr J.K. McLean (vocal), including the first performances of Benjamin Dale, Before the paling of the stars (a Christmas hymn, for voices and a small orchestra) and Percy Grainger, The Inuit (song) and the first London performance of Vaughan Williams, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis (conducted by the composer). Also, pieces by C.H.H. Parry (Symphony in four linked movements) and Percy Grainger (Green Bushes, a passacaglia for small orchestra) conducted by respective composers.

25 February 1913: Madame Gleeson-White and Mr Gervase Elwes (vocal), with Mr John Cockerill (harp), conducted by Mr Balfour Gardiner, including the first performance of two pieces by Percy Grainger: Hillsong (for wind and percussion) and Colonial Song (for soprano, tenor, harp and orchestra). Also, the first English performance of the new version of Delius, Lebenstanz.

4 March 1913: London Choral Society (conducted by Mr Arthur Fagge) with Mr J. Campbell McInnes (vocal), conducted by Mr Balfour Gardiner, including the first performance of the following works: Arnold Bax, Christmas Eve on the Mountains (for orchestra); Percy Grainger, Sir Eglamore (for double mixed chorus, brass, strings and percussion); and Von Holst, The Cloud Messenger (ode for chorus and orchestra). The pieces by Grainger and Von Holst were conducted by the composers, as was the first London performance of Vaughan Williams, Fantasia on Christmas Carols (for baritone solo, chorus and orchestra).

18 March 1913: conducted by Mr Balfour Gardiner, including the first performance of Frederic Austin, Symphony in E major and the first London performance of G. Bantock, Fifine at the Fair (an orchestral dance with prologue).
