Description
This collection contains six volumes of programmes for the Birmingham Musical Festival. The first volume contains 8 programmes for the concerts of the 1829 festival, held in
St. Phillip's Church and the Theatre Royal. It also contains one programme for the 1834 festival and four programmes for the 1837, held in the Town Hall (all concerts were held at this venue from this time onwards). The second volume acts a scrapbook containing newspaper cuttings and other ephemera connected with the festival of 1852, containing 8 concert programmes. The third volume also acts as a scrapbook for the festival of 1858, containing 8 programmes. The fourth volume contains all the programmes for the concerts for the Festival of 1861. The fifth volume contains all the programmes for the Festival of 1864, as does the sixth volume.

Collections Overview
The Henry Watson Music Library is named after Dr. Henry Watson, a renowned composer and teacher born in nearby Accrington. After his death in 1911 he bequeathed the contents of his private library to the care of Manchester City Council. Watson's original collection (some 16,700 volumes) has been supplemented by many important donations and acquisition since and has grown into one of the largest collections of music in any public library.
