Description Collection of programmes, press releases, press cuttings, correspondence, notes by Mr. Acton regarding the concerts and general ephemera from the Dublin Festival of 20th Century Music 1970-84 presented by the Music Association of Ireland. The festival booklets contain programmes for the individual concerts and biographies with photos for the preformers and composers.

4/1/70-9/1/70: Examination Hall, Trinity: 11 individual festival programmes for each concert (sometimes, two held in one day), two of which were Invitation Symphony Concerts with the RTE Symphony Orchestra. Two programmes are accompanied by typewritten word-sheets. 1 leaflet providing details of all the concerts.

8/1/71 - 13/1/71: Examination Hall, Trinity and St. Francis Xavier hall, Upper Sherrard Street: Festival booklet for the 3rd Dublin Festival of 20th Century Music. Booklet contains essays by Acton and Fanny Feehan. Three first performances: 'Five Correlations for piano' by Gerard Victory, 'Dialogue for horn and piano' by John Kinsella and 'A Pack of Fancies for solo harp' by Brian Boydell.

24/6/72-30/6/72: Examination Hall, Trinity, St. Patrick's Cathedral and St. Francis Xavier hall, Upper Sherrard Street:
Festival booklet for the 4th Dublin Festival of 20th Century Music. Individual concert programmes from the festival accompany the booklet: 24/6/72, 30/6/72. Additional ephemera with the booklet includes word-sheets (one dated: 27/6/72 + duplicate), leaflet and an individual sheet of programme notes.

5/1/74-11/1/74: Examination Hall TCD, St. Patrick's Cathedral and St. Francis Xavier hall, Upper Sherrard Street: Festival booklet (plus duplicate) for the 5th Dublin Festival of 20th Century Music. 7 individual typewritten programmes/word books accompany the booklet for concerts on 6/1/74-11/1/74 with two concerts on the 9/1/74.

7/1/76-9/1/76: Examination Hall, Trinity College; St. Francis Xavier Hall. Festival booklet for the 6th Dublin Festival of 20th Century Music. Three typewritten programmes/wordbooks accompany the booklet.

6/1/78-13/1/78: Examination Hall, TCD; St. Francis Xavier Hall; RDS Concert Hall; Project Arts Centre; John Player Theatre and St. Andrews, Westland Row. Festival booklet (plus duplicate) for the 7th Dublin Festival of 20th Century Music. Flyer included with booklet.

3/1/80-11/1/80: Examination Hall, TCD; St. Francis Xavier Hall; John Player Theatre. Festival booklet for the 8th Dublin Festival of 20th Century Music. 6 individual typewritten programmes/wordsheets accompany the booklet for concerts on 3/1/80, 6/1/80, 7/1/80, 8/1/80, 10/1/80 and 11/1/80.

5/1/82-12/1/82: Examination Hall, Trinity College; School of Music, No.5, Trinity College; Edmund Burke Theatre, Trinity College, National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace. Festival booklet for the Ninth Dublin Festival of 20th Century Music. A 'stop press' notice of change of performer accompanies the booklet.

6/1/84-13/1/84: National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace; John Field Room, National Concert Hall, Earlsfort Terrace; Graduates Memorial Building, Trinity College; Carysfort College, Blackrock. Festival booklet (plus duplicate) for the Tenth Dublin Festival of 20th Century Music. Typrwritten drafts of articles relating to the festival by Acton, and 2 typewritten word-sheets accompany the booklet.

Collections Overview The National Library of Ireland has two collections consisting mainly of printed sheet music from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century. These include much material from the mainsteam western classical music tradition, but also material relating to little known Irish composers. The names of the two collections are the Joly Music Collection and the Additional Music collection. In addition the Library has a small but significant collection of music manuscripts. The general printed collections include some Irish ballad, folk-music and popular song collections.
