Collection name Arthur Hervey Collection (1881-1897)

Description An album of programmes and other ephemera, relating to Arthur Hervey, from 1881 to 1897. The majority of items in the collection relate to the composing life of Arthur Hervey, as opposed to his career as a music critic. Hervey lived from 1855 to 1922, and some of compositions date from after the temporal span of material in this album. As well as programmes, the collection also includes the following items: reviews of cuttings from both London and provincial publications; press cuttings from announcements of concerts containing Hervey’s music; adverts for sales of sheet music by Hervey; small musical examples and ranges of vocal items from Hervey’s works, which were presumably produced by publishers as advertising material. In addition, near the beginning of the volume there is a handwritten list of Hervey’s published works, arranged chronologically from 1875 to 1912.

The programmes represent a variety of concerts venues, from private houses to high-profile concert halls. While the majority of programmes relate to London concerts, provincial and foreign venues are also represented. There are programmes from the following venues: Villa Macdonald, Bordighera; Assembly Rooms, Finchley; New Public Hall, Preston; Steinway Hall; Royal Court Theatre; 7 St. James’s Square; 2 Cromwell Houses [town unknown]; Prince’s Hall, Piccadilly; 6 Seamone Place; 46 Wimpole Street; Grosvenor Hotel, Belgravia; 41 Grosvenor Square; St. James’s Hall; 69 Portland Place; Centenary Sunday Schools, Shirley Street, Canning Town; Lyric Club, Piccadilly; Steinert Hall; 20 Portman Square; Kurhaus zu Homburg; Queen’s Hall; Salle d’auditions. The Steinway Hall is particularly prolific in this collection.

The majority of programmes are from solo-vocal concerts or mixed concerts, where a song by Hervey is part of a programme which contains works by many different composers. Sometimes one of Hervey’s short instrumental works takes the place of a song. Often these programmes represent concerts of late Victorian music; Hervey’s works also sit within concerts of earlier, continental works. There are also a few programmes from performances of Hervey’s orchestral works, in particular his “Dramatic Overture” (1890?). In addition, there are programmes from Hervey’s stage works, including a comic opera.

Material is arranged in clusters: for example reviews of one particular work are kept together. There is a loose chronological arrangement to the album.
