Description
A collection of one box of programmes donated by the Foss family, 1937 to 1998. The collection was donated by Mrs Norah Foss, and some of the items originally belonged to Hubert James Foss (1899-1953), music publisher and editor.
The collection consists chiefly of programmes from various types of performances that took place in London. There is a substantial number of concert programmes in the collection, usually from orchestral concerts. These include a large number of programmes from Henry Wood Promenade Concerts. There is a substantial number of opera programmes in the collection, chiefly from performances at the London Coliseum, but include programmes by the Royal Opera as well as other companies. There are a number of programmes from performances of musicals. There are a few miscellaneous programmes from plays, circus performances, church services, films and dinners.
The concerts took place in the following venues in London: Fairfield Hall, Croydon; Royal Albert Hall; St. John’s, Smith Square; Purcell Room; Queen’s Hall; Royal Opera House [chiefly opera performances, but some orchestral concerts, including London Philharmonic Orchestra]; Royal Festival Hall; Broadcasting House; Sadler’s Wells Theatre; Golders Green Hippodrome; London Coliseum [chiefly opera performances, but some orchestral concerts, including London Philharmonic Orchestra]; King’s College, London; Kingsway Hall; King’s Theatre, Hammersmith; People’s Palace; Orpheum, Golders Green; Central Hall, Westminster. In addition to the London programmes there are also a few programmes from the following provincial venues: King’s Hall, Balmoral, Belfast; Corn Exchange, Blandford; Bournemouth Pavilion; City Hall, Sheffield; Town Hall, Watford. There is also one programme from the Henry and Edsel Ford Auditorium, Detroit.
