Collection Description

Collection name Aylmer Buesst Collection: Miscellaneous programmes (1912-1935)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of three volumes of programmes and prospectuses from concerts, 1912 to 1935. Two volumes are bound in similar bindings, and contain programmes from 1912 to 1924, and 1921 to 1935. Though there is no absolute order, the programmes are loosely arranged reverse chronologically. Both volumes are particularly rich in programmes from the year 1921. The single volume contains programmes from 1926 to 1940, arranged in chronological order.

Though the volumes are miscellaneous in nature, the two volume set largely contain programmes from the Queen’s Hall, London. A significant amount of the programmes from the Queen’s Hall, are from the series “Symphony Concerts”. There are a few foreign programmes at the end of the 1912-1924 volume. The single volume largely contains provincial programmes, with a small number of London programmes.

The venues included in all three volumes are as follows: Queen’s Hall; Opernhaus zu Dresden (“Schuch-feier” – an event for the conductor Ernest von Schuch, to mark 40 years since his first performance with the Dresden Opera); Staats-Theater (Opernhaus), Berlin; Carnegie Hall, New York; Royal Albert Hall; Eastbrook Hall, Bradford; St. Andrew’s Hall, Glasgow; Central Hall, Liverpool; Town Hall, Birmingham; Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline.

The majority of concerts in the programmes are orchestral or choral. A variety of orchestras, choirs, performers and conductors are represented. There are a small amount of programmes from Buesst’s conducting career. There is a programme from Buesst’s first performance with the Philharmonic Society in Liverpool on 8/2/1927, including a short biography. There are two programmes from the Queen’s Hall – on 13/11/23 and 18/12/23 – where Buesst conducted the London Symphony Orchestra. These programmes include a sepia photograph of the conductor on the cover.
