Collection Description

Collection name Aylmer Buesst Collection: Philharmonic Society (1915-1928)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of programmes from 1915 to 1928. The majority of programmes are from concerts organised by the Royal Philharmonic Society. These concerts took place in the Queen’s Hall. The orchestra is unspecified, and was conducted by a variety of conductors. The concerts were largely orchestral, with some solo instrumental items where a prominent soloist was also playing a concerto in the same concert. In addition, some of the concerts featured choral items: these were performed by a variety of choirs, including the Philharmonic Chorus and choirs from music conservatoires such as the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music.

Other programmes in the collection are from the Queen’s Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. The Queen’s Hall programmes include performances by the New Queen’s Hall Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra. The programme from the Royal Albert Hall was part of a series entitled “Special Sunday Concerts”, featuring the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra.

The programmes contain analytical programme notes and musical examples. Some of the programmes in the collection have been cut to fit the volume size – the volume is the size of the Royal Philharmonic Society Programmes – and are thus missing parts of their texts.

Arrangement:
The programmes are loosely arranged in the reverse chronological order, with the 1928 programmes appearing first in the volume.
