Unique identifier
Description Henry Wood Collection: Brand Lane Orchestral Concerts (1913-1926)

A collection of six bound volumes and eight loose items for Brand Lane Orchestral concerts, 1913 to 1924.

There are volumes from the following seasons: 1913-1914; 1914-1915; 1916-1917; 1917-1918; 1919-1920; 1920-1921. In addition, there are loose items as follows: 1918-1919 (1 programme); 1921-1922 (1 prospectus, 1 programme); 1922-1923 (2 programmes); 1923-1924 (2 programmes); undated: visit by Richard Strauss (1 programme).
The concerts were given by the Brand Lane Symphony Orchestra (later the New Brand Lane Symphony Orchestra), conducted by Henry Wood. The collection also includes a programme from a concert given in 1920 by the Full band of His Majesty’s Grenadier Guards, conducted by Captain A. Williams. The concerts were given at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester.

The concert took place usually every fortnight or every three weeks, from October/November to February/March. The number of concerts per season increased with time: there were 7 concerts per season from 1913 to 1913; 9 concerts per season from 1919-1920; 10 concerts per season from 1920-1921; it is probable that there were 12 concerts per season from thereafter.

The concerts were orchestral, with occasional themed nights such as “Wagner Nights”.

The programmes contain analytical programme notes, which were particularly prominent in the earlier programmes. These were written by Rosa Newmarch

Arrangement:
The programmes are arranged in chronological order. Loose programmes are kept at the end of the sequence.
