Collection Description

Collection name German music festivals (1889-1897)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of one volume of programmes from various German music festivals, 1889 to 1897.

The collection includes three occurrences of festivals organised by the Allgemeinen Duetschen Musikverein. These festivals - entitled “Tonkünstler-versammlung” – showcased new music, and took place in a different town or city each year. The collection includes festival books from the 1889, 1895 and 1897 festivals. The 1889 festival took place in Wiesbaden, from the 27th to 30th June. Venues used in the festival included the grossen Saale des Curhaises, weissen Saale des Curhauses and evangelischen Hauptkirche. The 1895 festival took place in Braunschweig from the 12th to 16th June. Venues used for this festival included the Saalbau, Herzoglichen Hoftheater and Egydienhalle. The 1897 festival took place in Mannheim, and lasted from the 26th May to the 1st June. Venues used for the festival included the Saalbau, Theatersaale and Grossherzogl. Hof und Nationaltheater. Repertoire presented at the concerts included orchestral music and chamber music.

The collection contains a festival book from the “Drittes kammermusikfest” which took place in Bonn, from 23rd to 27th May. The festival was dedicated to the memory of Brahms – who had died earlier that year – and concerts took place in the Beethoven Haus. The festival consisted predominantly of the chamber music of Brahms.

There are two festival books from the Niederrheinisches Musikfest that took place in Köln in 1892 and 1895. The festivals lasted for three days, from the 5th to 7th June in 1892 (the 69th festival), and the 2nd to 4th of June in 1895 (the 72nd festival). Concerts took place in the Gürzenich.

There are also a number of pages from an unidentified German music festival.

The majority of programmes in the collection contain analytical programme notes. There are also numerous occurrences of musical examples, and many portraits of composers and performers.
