Collection Description

Collection name Hollywood Bowl (1931-1932)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of two volumes of orchestral programmes from the Hollywood Bowl, 1931 to 1932. Each season lasted for eight weeks during July and August. There were four concerts per week, in a “Tuesday – Thursday – Friday – Saturday” formation. Programmes are entitled “Symphonies under the stars”. The conductor of the concerts varied. In the 1931 volume, the conductor was usually assigned for a whole week or fortnight, but in the 1932 volume there are often two or more conductors per week. Conductors represented in the collection include Walter Damrosch, Hamilton Harty, Artur Rodzinski, Pierre Monteux, Alfred Hertz, Bernardino Molinari, Alfred Wallenstein and Frederick Stock. The concerts contained orchestral music: these were frequently symphonic concerts, but some concerts also included smaller pieces, as well as ballet items and opera arias. In particular, Hamilton Harty populated some of his programmes with contemporary or near-contemporary British music. In addition, the 1932 season ended with a complete opera, Samson and Delilah (Saints-Saëns). The performing orchestra is not mentioned in the programmes, but it is most likely to have been the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. The programmes contain analytical programme notes.
