Description
One volume of programmes from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, from 1938 to 1939. The programmes contain analytical programme notes – frequently written by Felix Borowski – and musical examples. The chief conductor of the season was Frederick Stock, and associate conductor was Hans Lange. The programmes are from the 48th season of the orchestra – the orchestra was founded in 1891 by Theodore Thomas – and represent a variety of types of concert.
There are 28 programmes from “Thursday-Friday” concerts: these took place on Thursday evenings and the subsequent Friday afternoon, but no venue is listed. There are six programmes from Tuesday Symphony Concerts, which took place on Tuesday afternoons in an unspecified venue. There are also six programmes from Young People’s Concerts: these took place in Orchestra Hall on Wednesday afternoons. Popular concerts – thirteen programmes – took place in Orchestra Hall on Saturday evenings. There are two miscellaneous programmes from a “Holiday Concert” and an “Extra Concert”, which took place in Chicago. There are also programmes from concerts which took place at various venues within and outside of Chicago as follows: Music Hall, Cincinnati, Ohio; Pabst Theatre, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; unknown venue in Milwaukee [possibly also the Pabst Theatre]; Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, Iowa; Dyche Stadium, Evanston, Illnois (part of North Shore music Festival/Evanston Music Festival); Grant Park, Chicago; Ravinia, Illinois [an outdoor performance venue, situated on a large country estate]. There are five programmes from concerts given by the Civic Orchestra – which is emblazoned “for the development of symphony players” – which took place on Sunday afternoons at Orchestra Hall.
The volume contains an index of the works performed at the Thursday-Friday concerts during the 1938 to 1939 season, as well as soloists involved during the season. At the end of the volume, there is a complete music list from concerts given 1891 to 1939, which is arranged by composer.

The programmes are subdivided into series – in the order of series as described above – then arranged chronologically. The concerts given outside of Chicago are an exception: these concerts are arranged by venue.
