Collection name Newcastle (1918-1927)

Description A collection of 49 programmes largely from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1918 to 1927. The programmes have been numbered in pencil, which correlates to a manuscript index of pieces performed and performers. The programmes number 1 to 50, but programme number "48" has been removed. Some programmes include analytical programme notes.

The collection chiefly consists of programmes from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The programmes are largely from the following venues: Town Hall, Newcastle; Grand Assembly Rooms, Barras Bridge; King’s Hall, Armstrong College, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In addition, there are a small number of programmes from the following venues: Town Hall, Gateshead; Cathedral Church of Saint Nicholas.

The majority of concerts were given by one of the following three groups. Orchestral concerts were given by the Newcastle Symphony Orchestra, given chiefly in the Town Hall, Newcastle. The Newcastle-upon-Tyne Bach Choir acted as both promoter and performer. The choir performed the majority of its concerts in the King’s Hall, Armstrong College as well as promoting various concerts of chamber music. Finally, the Chamber Music Society organised concerts in the Grand Assembly Rooms. Other organisations represented by the programmes in the collection include Newcastle and Gateshead Choral Union, Newcastle Philharmonic Orchestra and the British Music Society.

The collection also contains a festival brochure and one individual programme from the Three Choirs Festival (1922) held in Gloucester. These items detail concerts that took place in the cathedral, and Shire Hall, and include a small amount of press cuttings. There are also miscellaneous programmes from Houldsworth Hall, Deansgate and Town Hall, Durham in the collection.

Concerts represented in the collection are varied: they include performances of oratorio, orchestral concerts, chamber concerts and recitals.
