Leeds Popular Concerts (1881-1889)
Unique identifier
Description
A collection of 48 programmes from Leeds Popular Concerts, 1881-1889. Sometimes, the concerts were entitled “Subscription concerts (late popular concerts)”; from 1881 to the 1883/4 season, the concerts were named “Leeds Chamber Concerts”. The collection includes, word books, analytical programme notes and musical examples.
The concerts took place at the following venues: Philosophical Hall, Park Row (1881); Albert Hall, Cookridge Street (1882-1884); Town Hall (1885); Coliseum, Cookridge Street (late 1885-1889).
The majority of programmes are from chamber concerts or orchestral concerts. There are a small number of programmes from mixed orchestral and vocal concerts. The orchestra was often “Sir Chas. Hallé’s augmented band” or “Halle’s Band”, usually conducted by Charles Hallé. Some programmes have an unspecified orchestra, and some of these were conducted by August Manns. In addition, the collection contains one programme from “A Grand Richter concert”: this featured Richter conducting the Richter Orchestra and Leeds Philharmonic Society.
Arrangement:
The programmes are arranged chronologically.
