Collection Description

Collection name Liverpool Philharmonic Society (1872-1879)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of 126 programmes from concerts given by the Liverpool Philharmonic Society, 1872 to 1879.

The concerts were given at Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool.

The majority of programmes are from Subscription concerts organised by the society. Other programmes include series four to seven of the Monday Popular Concerts (“From London”) from 1871 to 1875. There are also a few programmes from “Grand Evening Concerts”, “Grand Morning Concerts”, miscellaneous charity concerts and single-concert performances of The Messiah which occurred virtually every year.

The collection contains around twelve programmes per season for the Subscription Concerts. These concerts took place on Tuesdays. Concerts took place in January to March or April, then October to December. However, the designation of seasons changes in the collection in 1876. From 1872 to 1876, the seasons ran from January to March or April (concerts one to six), then October to December (concert seven onwards). From October 1876 onwards, the seasons ran from October to March or April the subsequent year. The concerts were conducted by Julius Benedict.

Monday Popular Concerts were frequently on Wednesdays - the term "Monday" refers to the name of the seris in St. James's Hall London, which indeed took place partially on Mondays - and there were four per season.

The programmes contain analytical programme notes and musical examples; the programmes from the Monday Popular Concerts were particularly substantial.
