Collection Description

Collection name Glasgow Choral Union (1874-1893) UNFINISHED!!
Unique identifier
Description A collection of programmes from the Glasgow Choral Union, 1874 to 1893.

Concert venues are not listed on programmes from 1874. Concerts took place in City Hall (1875-1877) and chiefly took place in St. Andrew’s Hall (1879-1893). For the period 1877-1878, the venue is cited as “New Public Halls” or “Public Halls”. However, it is possible that this venue was actually the recently built (completed 1877) St. Andrew’s Hall.

The concerts featured oratorios, large-scale cantatas, orchestral music and occasionally chamber music.
[Performers?? Who were the orchestra??]

There are a variety of amounts of programmes per season. However, the majority of seasons have at least 10 concerts per season; sometimes the numbering system for concerts was divided between “Orchestral Concerts” and “Choral Concerts”. The bulk of each season took place from late November to January.
