Description A collection of 30 programmes from concerts organised by the BBC, from 1955 to 1956. Some programmes contain analytical programme notes with illustrative musical examples.

The collection contains programmes from the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Concert Orchestra. The programmes from the BBC Symphony Orchestra include London concerts given in the Royal Festival Hall, and provincial concerts as follows: Colston Hall, Bristol; Salisbury Cathedral; Ulster Hall, Belfast; Guildhall, Londonderry; Theatre Royal, Dublin. The concerts occasionally included performances by the following groups: BBC Chorus; BBC Show Band; BBC Choral Society; BBC Women’s Chorus.

Programmes from the BBC Concert Orchestra are from the following provincial venues: Corn Exchange, Bedford; Kursaal Ballroom, Southend-on-Sea; Assembly Hall, Tunbridge Wells; Winter Gardens, Margate; Dome, Brighton; Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone; Assembly Hall, Worthing; De la Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea; Town Hall, Clacton; Guildhall, Southampton. Performances by the orchestra were occasionally supplemented with performances by the following choirs: BBC Men’s Chorus; Bexhill Choral Society; Worthing Municipal Choir; Folkestone Halliday Girls’ Choir; Freda Parry Choir; Brighton Male Voice Choir; Brighton Girls’ Choir; Brighton and Hove Harmonic Society; Danish Radio Entertainment Choir.

There is also a programme from a concert entitled “New Music for Brass”; this was organised as part of the BBC Light Programme, and took place in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh.

Arrangement:

Programmes are divided between BBCSO and BBCCO, with the “New Music for Brass” programme dividing the two sequences. BBCSO concerts are divided between London concerts and provincial concerts, and both of these sequences are arranged chronologically. BBCSO programmes are organised chronologically.
