Description
A collection of 35 programmes from concerts organised by the BBC, 1945 to 1946.
The majority of programmes relate to performances by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. A number of these concerts were conducted by Adrian Boult. The programmes are predominantly from concerts given in London, at the Royal Albert Hall and the People’s Palace. Some of the concerts given at the Royal Albert Hall were “BBC Symphony Concerts”; concerts given at the People’s Palace, were “BBC Sunday Afternoon Concerts”. The collection also includes programmes from provincial tours of the orchestra, with programmes from the following venues: Guildhall, Cambridge; Hippodrome Theatre, Coventry; St. Andrew’s Hall, Norwich.
The collection contains a number of programmes from concerts given by the BBC Theatre Orchestra; these were conducted by Stanford Robinson, and took place at the People’s Palace.
There are also programmes from a tour of the BBC Singers, conducted by Leslie Woodgate. The tour included the following venues: The Arcadia, Llandudon; Grove Park Girls’ School, Wrexham; Miner’s Institute, Rhos [shorterned version of Rhosllanerchrugog], Wrexham.
In addition to the above ensembles, some of the concerts represented in the collection also featured the BBC Theatre Chorus or the BBC Choral Society. A few concerts represented in the collection were promoted by the Royal Philharmonic Society.
Arrangement:
The programmes are loosely arranged by performing group: BBCSO, BBCTO, BBC Singers. The BBCSO programmes are divided between London and the provinces. After the above divisions, the programmes are organised by chronological order.
