Description
A collection of material from the studies and career of Dorothy Folkard, 1920 to 1927. The collection relates to Dorothy Folkard’s studies at the Royal Academy of Music, as well as her career as pianist and teacher. The collection contains 31 programmes as well as various items of ephemera including reports from the Royal Academy of Music, prize lists, posters, press cuttings and “Press opinion” booklets.
The collection contains 10 programmes – which only contain lists of music – from semi-public concerts at the Royal Academy of Music. These concerts were given by students and advertised as “work in progress”, though the general public was permitted to attend. The collection contains 21 programmes from other concerts; these are largely concerts where Dorothy Folkard performed as a pianist, but some programmes are from concerts where Dorothy Folkard’s pupils were performing. The majority of these programmes are from concerts given in central London or South London, particularly in Croydon. Venues included in the collection are: Queen’s Hall; Large Public Hall, Croydon [a significant number from this venue]; Presbyterian Hall [geographic location unknown]; Small Public Hall, Croydon; Hogarth Hall, Town Hall, Chiswick; Royal Academy of Music, Duke’s Hall; Streatham Conservative and Unionist Association; Art Gallery, Croydon; Purley Congregational Church; St. Michael’s, Bognor. In addition, there is a programme organised by the University of London Union Society, where no venue is stated.
Arrangement:
The collection is loosely arranged by type of material, then chronologically. The order of material type is approximately as follows: Royal Academy of Music reports, semi-public Royal Academy of Music programmes, Royal Academy of Music prize lists, main performance ephemera including public concert programmes.
