Description
A collection of programmes from concerts given at the Imperial Institute, London. The programmes date from May-August 1897 and May-August 1898: each week within this period is usually represented by programmes from more than one day. The programmes are from concerts which were one facet of day-long programmes of entertainments; the non-musical events included exhibitions, lectures and demonstrations, thus providing informative events alongside items of entertainment. The programmes from 1897 are chiefly from concerts given by Eduard Strauss and an unnamed orchestra from Vienna; the programmes include overtures, waltzes, polkas and marches. There is also a programme from a concert of music given by the Band of the Royal Artillery. The programmes from 1898 are generally from concerts given by the concert orchestra of La Scala Milan, conducted by Leandro Campanari; these programmes include overtures, preludes, waltzes and the occasional small-scale but complete symphony.
