Edinburgh Royal Choral Union: Box 5 of 6 (1983-93)
Collection of ca. 450 programmes, newspaper cuttings, handbills, correspondence, artist contracts, and prospectuses from seasons 126-135 of the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union, with every season in a separate envelope within the box. Within each envelope is a list of all the concerts performed in that particular season (not all of which have programmes), with a record of venue, works performed, conductor, orchestra, and soloists, and indications of first performances in Edinburgh and Scotland. There are also ca. 40 posters from all seasons, grouped together. Many of the programmes have been signed by soloists and conductors.
Highlights of the collection:
19/11/83: Scottish premiere of Gilbert Vinter's 'The Trumpets', with the Newtongrange and Bilston Colliery Band conducted by Nigel Boddice with Ivor Klayman (bass): Usher Hall.
1/12/84: With the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vernon Handley, with Bernadette Greevy (contralto): Usher Hall.
1/3/86: With the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Andrew Parrott, featuring the world premiere of John McLeod's 'Stabat Mater' conducted by the composer. Soloists Benjamin Luxon (baritone) and Jane Manning (soprano): Usher Hall.
20/2/88: With the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Roderick Brydon, and soloists Andrée Back (soprano) and Charles Naylor (baritone): Usher Hall.
2/3/91: Conducted by Christopher Bell with Susan Leslie (soprano), Yvonne Howard (contralto), Barry Banks (tenor), and Robert Poulton (bass): Methodist Central Hall.
21/11/92: Herbert Howells Centenary Concert conducted by Timothy Byram-Wigfield with the Choir of St. Mary's Cathedral and Morley Whitehead (organ) and Ivor Klayman (bass): St. Cuthbert's Parish Church.
