Edith Coates/Harold Powell Lloyd concert programme collection
Description
The collection forms part of the Edith Coates/Harold Powell Lloyd archives deposited with Cambridge University Library. It contains programmes of performances by the mezzo-soprano Edith Coates (1908 – 1983) and the tenor and producer Harold Powell Lloyd (1900 – 1987).
There are six boxes containing approximately 650 programmes of their own performances/productions as follows:
Box 1: 1920 – 1938
Box 2: 1939 – 1944
Box 3: 1945 – 1951
Box 4: 1952 – 1957
Box 5: 1958 – 1966
Box 6: 1967 – 1985
The programmes are a mix of opera, recitals and choral performances, the majority taking place in the UK and Ireland. Opera programmes contain synopses of the plots and cast lists, together with performer biographies and, in many cases, photographs of the cast and/or production. Concert programmes include lists of performers and, less frequently, analytical notes about the music.
Opera performances included in this sequence are with the Old Vic and Sadler’s Wells companies at venues other than Sadler’s Wells and opera productions by Powell Lloyd include those for Carl Rosa Opera Company, Dublin Grand Opera Society and Welsh National Opera. Other concerts and recitals of popular operatic arias took place at a variety of venues across the UK: many in Wales and the north of England in particular.
