Collection Summary
Collection Title
McCann Collection: Russia (1968-1991)
Description
A collection of programmes from the McCann Collection. The collection contains programmes from concerts given outside the United Kingdom and were collected by the concert agent Norman McCann (1920-1999). The collection forms a signficant part of the one-box collection "Eastern Europe".
The majority of programmes date from the 1980s. The most prolific geographic location of concerts is Moscow; however there are also a small amount of programmes from cities such as St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk and Iaroslav. As the whole collection dates from the Soviet era, soviet place names such as “Leningrad” are used on programmes instead of their modern equivalents.
Moscow:
Moscow Conservatoire/Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatoire/Konservatoriia im. P. I. Chaikovskogo:
Bol’shoi Zal – 17 programmes
Malyii Zal – 1 programme
Other Moscow venues:
Kontsertnyi Zal imeni P. I. Chaikovskogo (10); Zal goma Uchenykh.
A number of programmes are from concerts organised by the Moskovskaia Gosudarstvennaia Filarmoniia.
There is a programme from a concert held in both the Bol’shoi Zal and Kontsertnyi Zal imeni P. I. Chaikovskogo.
St. Petersburg:
Filarmoniia imen D. D. Shostakovicha, Malyii Zal imen M. I. Glinka (3 – overarching complex also known as “Shostakovich Philharmonic” (post-1975)); Zerkal’nyi Zal v. Dvorsha Knyzei Belosel’skikh-Belozerskikh [Mirrored Hall, [in the] Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace].
There is a programme from a venue entitled “Kontsertiyi Zal”, where the geographic location is unknown. However, it is possible that this programme took place in St. Petersburg, as “Leningrad” appears alongside the year at the bottom of the programme’s cover.
Novosibirsk:
Kontsertiyi Zal – 6 programmes
The concerts were organised by two state institutions, including the Novosibirskaia Gosudarstvennaia Filharmoniia – on programme listed as “Novosibirskaia Filharmoniia”.
Kontsertiyi Zal, Doma Uchenykh SO AN SSSR – 1 programme
The concert was organised by two state institutions, including the Novosibirskaia Filharmoniia.
Iaroslavl (and Iaroslavl Oblast):
There are six programmes from the “Kontsertiyi Zal, Iaroslavskaia Oblastiaia Filharmoniia”, organised by the Iaroslavskaia Oblastiaia Filharmoniia. In addition there are two other programmes from concerts organised by the Iaroslavskaia Oblastiaia Filharmoniia; each programme accounts for two separate concerts, performed at different venues on consecutive days. One programme lists concerts held at the Kontsertiyi Zal Filharmoniia and the Dvorets Kul’tury I Tekhniki “Aviator” g. Andropov; the other lists concerts held at the Kontsertiyi Zal Filharmoniia and Dvorets Kul’tury Chasovogo Zavoga g. Uglich [Uglich is a town in the Iaroslavl Oblast].
