Collection Summary
Collection Title
London: Crystal Palace Triennial Handel Festival (1859-1926)
Description
A collection of items relating to the Triennial Handel Festival at the Crystal Palace, London. The collection also includes material relating to the Handel-Mendelssohn Festival in 1909. The collection contains 19 programmes, in addition to other items of performance ephemera such as tickets and loose seating plans. The majority of programmes include libretti of pieces performed, as well as music lists and lists of performers. Some of these programmes are brochures covering the entirety of a festival, while other programmes relate to one individual concert within a festival.
The collection also includes a few booklets about the 1859 and 1862 festivals – entitled “Programme of arrangements” – which contain facts and figures about the festivals. The collection contains material from festivals from 1859 to 1926, but is by no means complete: the collection does not contain material from every festival, and some festivals are only represented by programmes from festival concerts or else by non-programme artefacts. The programmes and performance ephemera in the collection relate to large-scale performances of oratorio, which in most cases were performances of Handel oratorio.
Arrangement:
The collection is arranged chronologically.

Collections Overview
During the course of 2008 a new facility providing collection storage space, reader facilities and office space will created for the Centre for Performance History at College Hall, the site of the RCM's Hall of Residence in London W12. This will eventually offer improved access to researchers, and provide the collection with a secure and stable environment, all in one place.
In order that the relevant parts of the collection can be packed and prepared for the move, and then re-shelved at the new facility as expeditiously as possible, all facilities and services (including photographic services and access to the programmes collection) of the Centre for Performance History are suspended until 12 January 2009. The Museum of Instruments will continue to operate a full service (including public opening during the summer vacation) throughout this period.
We apologize for the inevitable inconvenience that this closure will cause to colleagues, students, researchers and members of the public, but believe that the improvements that will result will benefit the long-term preservation of the collections and will provide enhanced access to them for all users.
