Collection Summary
Collection Title
John Barbirolli, North American tour (1958-1959)
Description
A collection of one album of programmes and other ephemera from John Barbirolli’s North American tour, 1958 to 1959. The volume includes a significant amount of newspaper reports, articles, press cuttings as well as a few photographs and items of correspondence. Items from newspapers are from both the North American and British presses. Some articles feature reports or interviews with Lady Barbirolli – who was working on the tour, but not in a playing capacity.
The tour included venues in Canada and the United States, and took place from December 1958 to March 1959. The programmes are from concerts conducted by Barbirolli, featuring a variety of North American orchestras. These concerts were symphonic, and usually included items of British music. British items included pieces by Delius, Walton, Elgar and Vaughan Williams’: Vaughan Williams’ contributions were frequently “first performances” in a particular city of his eighth or ninth symphony. The British element also occasionally included the Elizabethan Suite by John Barbirolli. The programmes are from the following venues, which are listed in the order in which they appear in the album:
Winnipeg Civic Auditorium – Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra
Ford auditorium, Detroit – Detroit Symphony Orchestra
Constitution Hall, Washington DC – National Symphony Orchestra
Lisner Auditorium, Washington DC – National Symphony Orchestra
Academy of Music, Philadelphia – Philadelphia Orchestra
Carnegie Hall, New York – New York Philharmonic
Symphony Hall, Boston – Boston Symphony Orchestra
Sanders Theatre, Cambridge [Harvard University] – Boston Symphony Orchestra
Music Hall, Cincinnati - Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
Opera House, San Francisco – San Francisco Symphony Orchestra
Orpheum Theatre, Vancouver – Vancouver Symphony Orchestra
Programmes from Carnegie Hall, New York, are the most numerous. The album also lists the following venues for the tour: Pasadena, Los Angeles, and Georgia Auditorium, Vancouver. However, there are no programmes from these venues.
Arrangement:
The album is arranged chronologically. Programmes are kept alongside associated ephemera for each concert.
