Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for four performances given at St. James's Hall, London between 1898 and 1900, held as part of a tracted volume.
Unless otherwise stated below, these were concerts of vocal and instrumental solos.
2 June 1898: Mr Jack Robertson's Grand Concert, conducted by Miss Maude Valerie White, Mr Henry Bird and Mr F.A. Sewell, including Humorous and Musical Selections by George Grossmith. The programme lists the following performers: Mrs Hutchinson, Miss Louise Dale, Mrs Duncombe, Madame Alice Gomez, Miss Ada Crossley, Mr Jack Robertson, Mr Andrew Black and Mr Kennerley Rumford (vocal), Mr Louis Pécskai (violin) and Mr W.H. Squire (cello), with the The Angelus Glee Singers (Messrs Robert Alexander, Albon Nash, Henry Yates and Vernon Taylor).
20 October 1898: Blanche Marchesi's First Vocal Recital, with Johannes Wolff (violin), accompanied by Henry Bird, including the first English performance of J.S. Bach, Cantata 'Schlage doch', given with string quartet accompaniment (Messrs Wolff, Emil Kreuz, Alfred Hobday and W.H. Squire). This document carries some minor handwritten annotations indicating changes/additions to the printed programme.
11 December 1899: Grand Orchestral Concert given by Miss Edith Miller and Miss Ada Wright, led by Mr Edward O'Brien and conducted by Frederic Cowen, including the first performance of a finale movement from a piano concerto in D by Haydn.
4 December [1900]: Madame Eleanor Cleaver's Vocal Recital, given with Leonard Borwick (piano) and Mr J. Stuart Archer (organ), accompanied by Mr S. Liddle.
