Description
The programme and wordbook for a Grand Morning Concert, given at St. James’s Hall, London on 13 June 1890 for the benefit of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
This was a two-part concert of vocal and instrumental solos, including the first performance of Hamish MacCunn, New Scena ‘I’ve found my Mountain Lyre again’, written for and performed by Mr Sims Reeves, accompanied by the composer. The concert also included a recitation by Mr Beerbohm Tree.
The programme lists the following performers: Miss Liza Lehmann, Mrs Mary Davies, Madame Albani, Madame Patey, Madame Antoinette Sterling, Mr Ben Davies, Mr Lawrence Kellie and Mr Sims Reeves (vocal), the Meister Glee Singers (Messrs William Sexton, Gregory Hast, Avon Saxon and Webster Norcross), Johannes Wolff (violin), Leo Stern (obbligato cello), Joseph Hollman (solo cello), Mademoiselle Janotha (piano) and Mr Fountain Meen (organ accompaniment), directed by Wilhelm Ganz.
This document includes a list of the patrons and committee members for the concert and the each page of the wordbook carries a statement concerning the work of the Society.
