Description
A collection of 8 programmes and wordbooks relating to performances given at the Queen’s Hall, Langham Place, London between [1901] and 1909, arranged chronologically in a bound volume.
The concerts on [1 January 1901] and 7 January 1909 were given by Robert Newman’s Queen’s Hall Orchestra, led by Arthur W. Payne (1901)/Maurice Sons (1909), conducted by Henry J. Wood. Both programmes contain historical and analytical notes, including musical examples, by Rosa Newmarch.
Those concerts described as Ballad Concerts were two-part performances of vocal and instrumental music, given under the direction of William Boosey.
The first programme listed here has no front cover, meaning that the concert cannot be definitely dated. The date given below is based on the possibility that the missing cover may be that found as the final item in the volume: i.e. that for a New Year’s Day Afternoon Concert. Terry (organ), accompanied by Henry Bird. (programme and wordbook with an advertisement for the next concert in this series, to be given on 23 January 1904).
7 January 1905: Chappell Ballad Concert no.1, given by Miss Alice Nielsen and Madame Bertha Rossow, Madame Alice Gomez and Miss Carmen Hill, Mr Ben Davies and Mr Evan Williams, Mr Kennerley Rumford and Mr Dalton Baker and Mr Maurice Farkoa (vocal), with the Misses Sassard (vocal duo), Herr Wilhelm Backhaus (piano) and W.H. Squire (cello) accompanied by Hamilton Harty.
9 January 1905: 32nd West End Ballad Concert, given by Miss Phyllis Carr, Miss Ethel Maunder, Miss Georgina Stirling, Madame Edith Cooke, Mr Harold Cavesleigh and Mr John Fisher (vocal), with Mr A.C. Ambler, Madame Jeanne Laymet and Miss Vivian B. Stroud (piano), Herr Herman Koling (violin) and Mr A.H. Death ('Bone Solos'). The performance also included recitations and dramatic presentations by Miss Isabel E.C. Frost, Andrew Morton, Mr Louis Nickola, Miss Marjory Merryweather.
10 February 1906: Chappell Ballad Concerts no.7 (1905–06 season), given by Miss Helen Blain, Miss Carmen Hill, Miss Lillie Wormald, Madame Suzanne Adams, Mr Dalton Baker, Mr H.E. McKeown, Mr Kennerley Rumford, Mr Evan Williams and the Misses Sassard (vocal), with Mademoiselle Inez Jolivet (violin) and Herr Wilhelm Backhaus (piano), accompanied by Mr F.A. Sewell and Frederick Kiddle (programme and wordbook with a number of handwritten annotations regarding the programme order and the encores performed and an advertisement for the next concert in the series, to be given 24 February).
[February 1906]: Souvenir Programme for 'The Follies', held daily at 3pm, devised and arranged by H.G. Pélissier and performed with Dan Everard and Lewis Sydney and Miss Marjorie Napier, Gwennie Mars and Ethel Allandale. This includes details regarding the dramatic pieces performed, as well as the advice 'Don't bother about the Programme. Read the Advertisements'.
