Description
The prospectus and programmes for performances given at the Town Hall, Middlesbrough on 8 November and 26 December 1900 and 6 February and 27 March 1901 as part of the 19th season of the Middlesbrough Musical Union. Three concerts were given by subscription; that on 26 December constituted a special Christmas performance.
Each programme includes brief historical notes on the works performed or on the composers or performers involved.
8 November 1900: A. Goring Thomas, Cantata, ‘The Sun-Worshippers’; Max Bruch, Violin Concerto (Mr Louis Pecskai, violin); Haydn, ‘Military’ Symphony; Svendsen, Norwegian Rhapsody, with Miss Agnes Nicholls (soprano) and Mr Charles Saunders (tenor).
26 December 1900: Handel, The Messiah, with Miss Ethel Wood (soprano), Miss Bingham Hall (alto), Mr Hirwen Jones (tenor) and Mr Ivor Foster (bass).
6 February 1901: Hallé Orchestra, conducted by Dr Hans Richter.
27 March 1901: S. Coleridge Taylor, Scenes from Hiawatha, with Miss Maggie Davies (soprano), Mr Lloyd Chandos (tenor) and Mr Andrew Black (baritone), conducted by the composer.
Additional material: a list of the committee members and a notice regarding the objectives of the Union; a list of subscribers from the previous season and the terms of subscription for the present performances; and a list of the works previously performed by the Musical Union.
