London Ballad Concerts (1896-99)
A miscellaneous collection of wordbooks for eight performances given during the 31st, 32nd and 33rd seasons of the London Ballad Concerts, held at the Queen’s Hall, Langham Place between 1896 and 1899 under the direction of Messrs. Boosey and Co.
These were two-part vocal concerts, with occasional instrumental solos. All wordbooks contain an advertisement for the next performance in the series. This typically lists the performers engaged but not the works to be performed.
31st season: nos. 2, 3, 8 and 9
These concerts were given by Miss Ada Crossley, Miss Evangeline Florence, Madame Belle Cole, Mr Edward Lloyd and Mr Plunket Greene (vocal), accompanied by Mr Waddington Cooke (nos.2, 3 and 8) and Mr S. Liddle (nos.3, 8 and 9). Additional vocal and instrumental soloists are listed below.
14 November 1896: Miss Margaret Macintyre, Miss Mary Thomas, Mr Lloyd Chandos and Mr Franklin Clive (vocal), with Mr Leo Stern (cello) and Mr Eaton Fanning’s Select Choir.
26 November 1896: Mr Theodore Byard and Miss Lilian Comber (vocal), Miss Eldina Bligh (violin) and Mr R.H. Walthew (piano). The final piece in act one was a Ballad by Hermann Bemberg, given by Miss Gertrude Bevan and Miss Ellen Bowick (vocal), with violin, cello and piano accompaniment performed by Miss Edith E. Byford, Miss May H. Mukle and Miss Mabel E. Colyer (students of the Royal Academy of Music).
3 February 1897: Selections from Schubert, with Miss Esther Palliser, Miss Mary Thomas and Mr Arthur Barlow (vocal), Monsieur Tivadar Nachez (violin) and Mr Ernest Hutcheson (piano) (with some brief handwritten annotations, commenting on the nature and standard of the performance).
13 February 1897: Mr Eaton Fanning’s Select Choir and Monsieur Tivadar Nachez (violin). Part II of this concert was entitled: ‘English Music of the Olden Time, performed upon the Original Instruments for which it was written, under the direction of Mr Arnold Dolmetsch’, with Arnold Dolmetsch (lute and viola d’amore), Miss Helene Dolmetsch (viola da gamba), Mrs Elodie Dolmetsch (virginals and harpsichord), Mrs Bertha Moore (treble), Mr Jack Robertson (tenor) and Mr Douglas Powell (bass) (with some handwritten annotations regarding the encores performed).
32nd season: nos.1 and 4
These concerts were given by the Westminster Singers (Mr George May, Mr Harper Kearton, Mr Charles Ackerman and Mr W.H. Brereton), Miss Clara Butt, Miss Ada Crossley, Miss Louise Dale, Mr Edward Lloyd and Mr Plunket Greene (vocal) and Monsieur Tivadar Nachez (violin), accompanied by Mr S. Liddle with F.A. Sewell (accompanist no.4). Additional performers are listed below.
20 October 1897: Miss Georgina Delmar, Miss Lucile Hill, Mr George Ferguson and Mr Jack Robertson (vocal).
11 December 1897: Miss Susan Strong and Mr Andrew Black (vocal), with Mr Frederick Dawson (piano). A separate programme is held for this performance. The wordbook carries handwritten annotations regarding encores and other aspects of the performance.
33rd season: no.4 and 9
These concerts were given by Mr Edward Lloyd and Miss Evageline Florence (vocal) and Mr William Henley (violin), accompanied by Mr S. Liddle and Mr F.A. Sewell. Additional performers are listed below.
7 January 1899: Miss Ada Crossley, Miss Ethel Bevans, Miss Louise Dale, Mr Andrew Black, Mr Franklin Clive, Mr George Ferguson and Mr Thomas Thomas (vocal), including a recitation by Mr Clifford Harrison.
18 March 1899: Miss Clara Butt, Madame Bertha Moore, Mr Francis Harford and Mr H. Lane Wilson (vocal), The Westminster Singers and Monsieur Vladimir de Pachmann (piano) (with extensive handwritten annotations, commenting on various aspects of the performance and indicating the provision of encores).
