Description
A collection of analytical programmes for twenty Grand Orchestral Concerts given by the Orchestre des Concerts-Lamoureux (conducted by Charles Lamoureux) at the Queen’s Hall, Langham Place, between 1896 and 1898.
These were two-part concerts of nineteenth-century orchestral repertory, including a number of first English performances of music by French composers (these are the pieces cited in reference to specific concerts below).
All programmes include an introductory text on Lamoureux and his orchestra, extensive historical and analytical notes (with musical examples) by Edgar F. Jacques and a list of the orchestral ensemble.
Spring season 1896 (three concerts)
13 April 1896: Chabrier, Overture ‘Gwendoline’.
16 April 1896: Vincent d’Indy, Wallenstein’s Camp and Gustave Charpentier, Serenade (Impressions d’Italie), with Monsieur Bailly (viola soloist).
18 April 1896: Balakirev, Symphony Poem ‘Tamara’ and Berlioz, Chasse et Orage (Les Troyens).
Winter season: 16-21 November 1896 (five concerts)
16 November 1896: C. Franck, Symphonic Prelude to Part II of Redemption (first London performance).
17 November 1896: Theodore Dubois, Overture (Frithiof) and first London performance of Vincent d’Indy, Symphonic Legend ‘The Enchanted Forest’.
18 November 1896: Camille Chevillard, Symphonic Ballad.
19 November 1896: Franck, Symphony in D.
20 November 1896: Bourgault Ducoudray, Rapsodie Cambodgienne.
Spring season 1897
The prospectus and incomplete set of programmes (missing final performance) for six concerts given between 22 and 27 March, led by Monsieur Lucien Capet. Programmes for this season include advertisements for a range of other concerts at the Queen’s Hall. The concert on 26 March included the first English performance of Saint-Saens, Pianoforte Concerto No. 5 in F (op. 103), with Monsieur Louis Diemer (piano). The programme for the final concert of the series (27 March) can be found only in the prospectus or as an advertisement in the documentation relating to 26 March.

Prospectus and incomplete set of programmes for a series of ten performances given on 3, 10 and 24 November and 1 December 1897 and 2 and 16 February, 2 and 15 March, 20 April and 4 May 1898 (missing programmes for concerts 4, 7 and 9).
10 November 1897: Lazzari, Prelude ‘Amor’; Vincent d’Indy, Saugefleurie, legend for Orchestra’; and Charpentier, Napoli (Impressions d’Italie).
2 February 1898: Franck, Symphonic Poem ‘Les Djinns’ for Piano and Orchestra with Madame Henri Jossic (piano).
16 February 1898: including a performance of Beethoven, Symphony No.9 with the Queen’s Hall Choral Society and vocalists Medora Henson, Belle Cole, Lloyd Chandos and Thomas Meux.
