Description
A collection of programmes for ten concerts given in London between 30 May and 15 June 1949 as part of the Elgar Festival, arranged chronologically within a bound volume.
This event was sponsored by the Henry Wood Concert Society and all of the concerts consisted of works by Elgar. Unless otherwise stated below, they were given at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
The majority of the programmes include historical and analytical notes: those for the Orchestral Concerts are written by Edwin Evans and those for the choral performances by Basil Maine. Programmes for the choral performances also include wordbooks and programmes for both types of performance include a biographical note on Elgar written by Arnold Bax. The majority of programmes include photographs and have been signed by the vocal and/or instrumental soloists.
All concerts featuring the London Symphony Orchestra were led by George Stratton and conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent.
