Handel Festivals (1859-85)
Description
Programmes of Arrangements for the Handel Festivals given triennially between 1859 and 1885 at the Crystal Palace, conducted by Sir Michael Costa.
Each festival consisted of three performances (plus a Grand Rehearsal), featuring in turn Messiah, a Selection, and Israel in Egypt.
These documents consist of extended prose announcements of the Festivals which, in addition to outline the forthcoming event, offer a historical introduction. Each document carries a seating plan for the Crystal Palace.
20, 22 and 24 June 1859: Handel Commemoration Festival
23, 25 and 27 June 1862: Great Triennial Handel Festival
26, 28 and 30 June 1865: Great Triennial Handel Festival
15, 17 and 19 June 1868: Third Great Triennial Handel Festival
19, 21 and 23 June 1871: Fourth Great Triennial Handel Festival
22, 24 and 26 June 1874: Fifth Triennial Handel Festival
25, 27 and 29 June 1877: Sixth Triennial Handel Festival
21, 23 and 25 June 1880: Handel Festival
18, 20 and 22 June 1883: Eighth Triennial Handel Festival
22, 24 and 26 June 1885: Great Handel Festival in commemoration of the Bi-Centenary of Handel's Birth
The volume for 1880 also includes the Arrangements for the Summer Season, which, in addition to various non-musical events, comprised the following concerts/performances:
1 May: Grand Concert to mark the opening of the season, given by Madame Marie Roze, Madame Trebelli, Madame Patey, Mr E. Lloyd and Signor Foli (vocal), the Crystal Palace Orchestra and the bands of the Coldstream and Scots Guards, conducted by A. Manns.
5 and 12 May, 2 and 16 June and 7 and 14 July: Italian Operas, given by artists engaged from the Royal Italian Opera House, Covent Garden, conducted by Signor Vianesi and Signor Bevignani.
8, 15 and 22 May and 5 and 12 June: Popular Ballad Concerts.

Collections Overview
The Gerald Coke Handel Collection is an internationally important collection of material relating to Handel and his contemporaries, including manuscripts, printed books and music, libretti, paintings and engravings, memorabilia, art works and ephemera. The Handel collection is open for research Wednesday-Friday, and the display room (with access to recorded music) is open with the rest of the museum Tuesday-Sunday 10-6.
