Description
A miscellaneous collection of loose handbills, programmes and prospectuses (including some photocopies) for concert and operatic performances given at various venues in Hamburg between 1886 and 1992, arranged by venue over five folders, all of which are held within a single box.
Of the five folders, the first contains a miscellaneous collection of concert programmes (1886–1986), two include material relating to the Hamburgische Staatsoper (1949–92), one consists solely of a programmes from the 1922–23 season at the Thalia-Theatre, and the last contains prospectuses and programmes for various multi-venue events.
The two folders relating to the Hamburg Staatsoper are divided into the periods 1949–1956 (22 programmes) and 1957–1992 (13 programmes). In addition to programme books, the latter folder includes 16 handbills for productions given between August 1972 and May 1973 and seven sets of undated programme notes. Many of the handbills include handwritten observations on the performances.
The folder containing concert programmes includes photocopies of 7 programmes (some with lists of the orchestral ensemble) for performances given under Hans von Bulow between 1886 and 1894 and programmes with words and notes for performances given at the Musikhalle on 8/9 April 1956 (XI Philharmonisches Konzert with Claudio Arrau), 1/2 June 1969 (Norddeutscher Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester with Christoph Eschenbach, directed by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt) and 25 June 1986 (Louis Kentner, piano, for the Hamburger Bach-Gesellschaft). Also, a handbill for a Violin-Konzert by Daisy Kennedy (30 July 1928, Mozarthaus), a damaged programme for a production of Wagner, Tristan und Isolde (10 May 1923, Hamburger Stadt-Theater) and a programme for Handel, The Messiah, given on 24 November 1945 in the Concert Hall, Broadcasting House, Hamburg (presented by the Combined Services Entertainments Unit and given by the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Wilhelm Brückner Rüggeberg).
The final folder contains leaflets/prospectuses for the Johannes Brahms Festwoche of 3-11 May 1958 and 7-29 May 1983 and for the Ralph Benatzky Chanson Wettbewerb 1995. Also, the Festschrift zur Eröffnung des Neubaus (November 1986), a single document for 3 Sonderkonzerte presented by the Verein Hamburgischer Musikfreunde and given in the grosser Saal of the Musikhalle (29 May and 2 and 6 June 1923) and a programme for a performance of Leoncavallo, I Pagliacci, presented by the Combined Services Entertainment Unit and given with the Hamburg Theatre Orchestra (conducted by Hans Richard Stein) at an unspecified venue on 16 December 1950.

The Portraits and Performance History Collection and its associated reading room is housed in a recently adapted space within the RCM's College Hall, its hall of residence for students.

Collections Overview
The Centre for Performance History (CPH) is a research centre and is also responsible for the stewardship of two well-established RCM research collections, the Museum of Instruments and the Portraits and Performance History Collection (PPHC). The latter houses a diverse collection relating to the history of performance including the RCM’s internationally famous collection of images, comprising 340 original portraits and sculptures and 25,000 prints and photographs, forming the most comprehensive archive of likenesses of musicians in the UK. The collection of 600,000 concert programmes from 1720 to the present day is of major importance for research into the history of music, society and culture.
