Collection Summary
Collection Title
Ernst Perabo Recital (1900)
Unique Identifier
c.375.a
Description
The Souvenir Programme for a piano recital given by Ernst Perabo on 4 September 1900 in Thornhedge, Bar Harbor, Boston, with Franz Kneisel (violin). This programme was compiled by Lewis Niles Roberts and printed privately by The Sparrell Print, Boston.
The performance included both piano and violin sonatas by Beethoven, piano music by Th.H.H. Verhey, Anton Rubinstein, J.S. Bach and Schubert, and violin music by J.S. Bach and Brahms.
Most pieces are accompanied by a programme note of some kind. As well as text descriptions, certain works have pictorial or poetic reflections: accompanying the Adagio in A flat from Beethoven’s Sonata Op. 10/1 in C minor is a sonnet written by L.N. Roberts, apparently in response to an earlier performance of this movement by Perabo (date 1894).
Also included are a lengthy biographical note on Perabo (including extracts from his writings) and a short one on Kneisel, as well as notes on the composers. The volume ends with an extended selection from the writings of Perabo, including a piece entitled ‘The Message of Music’ and a series of articles in which Bach, Beethoven and Schubert are compared to Shakespeare, Goethe and Jean Paul respectively. These three articles, plus the discussion of Anton Rubenstein were originally published in the Boston Transcript.
