Description
A collection of programme books for concert nos. 1-11 of the 1874-75 season of the Crystal Palace Saturday Concerts, given between October and December 1874, conducted by August Manns.
All programmes include words and carry historical and analytical notes with musical examples, the majority written by George Grove.
10 October 1874: Mr Edward Lloyd and Mr Santley (vocal) with Mr Franklin Taylor (piano), including the 'first time of performance' of Mendelssohn, Overture in C (op. 24) and R. Wagner, A Faust-Overture.
17 October 1874: Madame Sinico-Campobello and Miss Antoniette Sterling (vocal) with Hans von Bülow (piano).
24 October 1874: Madame Otto-Alvsleben and Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal) with Mr Charles Hallé (piano).
31 October 1874: Madame Sinico-Campobello and Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal) with Mr Clinton (clarinet), including Brahms, Hungarian Dances, nos. 1-3 (first English performance).
7 November 1874: Madame Lemmens, Mademoiselle Thekla Fischer and Mr Vernon Rigby (vocal) with the Crystal Palace Choir, including the first English performance of H.H. Pierson, Concert Overture, 'Romeo and Juliet'.
14 November 1874: Madame Otto-Alvsleben and Mr Santley (vocal) with Mr Walter Bache (piano), including the first English performance of Joachim Raff, Symphony in E, 'Lenore'.
21 November 1874: Madame Sinico-Campobello and Mr Vernon Rigby (vocal) with Mr Edward Dannreuther (piano), including the first English performance of Liszt, Concerto for Pianoforte and Orchestra, No. 2 in A.
28 November 1874: Handel, L'Allegro ed il Penseroso, with Madame Lemmens-Sherrington, Miss Emily Spiller, Mr Edward Lloyd and Mr Whitney (vocal), the Crystal Palace Choir and John Stainer (organ).
5 December 1874: Signor Urio and Mr Santley (vocal) with Monsieur Sainton (violin).
12 December 1874: Madame Lemmens-Sherrington and Madame Patey (vocal).

Collections Overview
The Gerald Coke Handel Collection is an internationally important collection of material relating to Handel and his contemporaries, including manuscripts, printed books and music, libretti, paintings and engravings, memorabilia, art works and ephemera. The Handel collection is open for research Wednesday-Friday, and the display room (with access to recorded music) is open with the rest of the museum Tuesday-Sunday 10-6.
