Collection Summary
Collection Title
Concerts of Ancient Music (1780-1847)
Unique Identifier
11784.e.1.
Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for the Concerts of Ancient Music, given during the seasons 1780-82, 1784, 1795-98, 1800-12, 1814-23, 1825-31 and 1833-47, held as 53 bound volumes (one per season).
The majority of these concerts were two-part performances, consisting principally of solo and choral music by Handel (mostly oratorio extracts), typically with orchestral or instrumental items at the beginning of each act.
The programmes for 1780 indicate that the concerts were held at the New Rooms, Tottenham Street. Thereafter no venue is given, although it is known from other sources that the concerts were held in the Great Rooms of the King's Theatre (from 1795) and the New Rooms, Hanover Square (from 1804).
With the exception of those contained in the first volume (for which no information regarding the performers is available), all wordbooks list the names of the the vocal soloists.
Certain volumes also contain what might be referred to as Performers' Programmes. These are single-sheet handbills which both reproduce the programme and provide a printed indication of the volume and page number for the works to be performed.
