Description
A miscellaneous collection of programme books, with words and Analytical Remarks, for 12 Monday 'Pops' Concerts, given at St. James's Hall, London on 17 December 1861, 24 March and 27 October 1862, 27 May and 3 June 1865, 15 January and 2 July 1866, 25 March and 1 April 1867, 24 February and 14 December 1868 and 6 December 1869, arranged chronologically as a bound volume. Also, Programmes, Words, Notices &c for two New Philharmonic Concerts, given at the same venue on 29 April 1863 (12th season, no. 2) and 14 June 1865 (14th season, no. 5).
The 'Pops' concerts were given under the direction of Mr S. Arthur Chappell and conducted by Mr Benedict and Lindsay Sloper (27 October 1862 only). The New Philharmonic Concerts were conducted by Henry Wylde.
All programmes include musical examples as part of extensive programme notes. Those for the Monday 'Pops' often incorporate transcriptions of press reports of the performances whilst that from 14 June 1865 includes a list of the New Philharmonic Orchestra.
Note: this volume is labelled St. James Concerts (1861-63).
