Description
The prospectus, with programmes, for the four morning and two evening performances given between 25 and 28 August 1846 at the Town Hall, Birmingham as the Birmingham Musical Festival.
This document includes a list of Patrons, Presidents and Vice Presidents for the Festival and carries information about the general arrangements for the event (including a copy of the Regulations and details regarding tickets).
There is a complete list of the orchestral ensemble, led by Mr T. Cooke (morning) and Mr Willy (evening) and conducted by Dr. F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Mr Moscheles, with Mr Munden and Mr Stimpson (sub-conductors) and Dr Gauntlett and Mr Stimpson (organ).
The prospectus cites the involvement of the following vocal soloists: Madame Grisi, Madame Caradori Allan, Miss Bassano and Miss A. Williams (soprano); Miss M.B. Hawes and Miss M. Williams (alto); Signor Mario, Mr Braham, Mr Hobbs and Mr Lockey (tenor); and Herr Staudigl, Mr H. Phillips, Signor F. Lablache and Mr Machin (bass).
Morning concerts
25 August 1846: Haydn, The Creation, plus a selection from Rossini.
26 August 1846: Dr Mendelssohn’s New Oratorio, Elijah, composed expressly for this Festival.
27 August 1846: Handel, The Messiah.
28 August 1846: miscellaneous performance of sacred music, including parts of Beethoven, Grand Mass in D.
Evening concerts
26 and 27 August 1846. These were both two-part concerts consisting principally of vocal music. The second act of the concert on 27 August consisted of Mendelssohn, The Music to Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.
