Description
The programme and wordbook for a Grand Selection from the Works of Handel, Mozart, and the Most Celebrated Composers, given at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London on 4 March 1814.
This was a three-part concert of vocal music, with Handel’s Overture to the Occasional Oratorio to open and a Grand Concertante for 2 French Horns at the start of the third act, the latter performed by Messrs Schuncke (from Berlin) who were making their first appearance in this country.
Much of the vocal music was by Handel, supported by a range of English composers and small number of pieces by Mozart, including a Grand Chorus and Fugue receiving its first performance in England.
The second part of the concert comprised ‘A New Oratorio, (composed by Beethoven) called the Mount of Olives’, which was being given for the third time in England.
Between the parts were readings from Milton’s Paradise Lost, performed by Miss Smith.
The concert featured the vocalists Mrs Dickons, Mrs Bland, Miss Hodson, Mr Naldi, Mr C. Smith, Mr Pyne, Mr Leonard, Master Barnett and Mr Bellamy, led by Mr Henry Smart and conducted by Sir George Smart.
The choruses were assisted by the choristers of Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral.
