A collection of three volumes of programmes from provincial venues, 1904 to 1912.
The programmes are largely from provincial venues, though there are a few programmes from London venues and from outside Great Britain. The venues included in the collection are as follows: Midland Hall, Manchester; Devonshire Park, Eastbourne; Town Hall, Birmingham; Grand Hotel, Sheffield; Guildhall, Cambridge; Free Trade Hall, Manchester; St. George’s Hall, Bradford; Albert Hall, Sheffield; Town Hall, Great Yarmouth; Town Hall, Huddersfield; St. George’s Hall, Kendal; Town Hall, Leeds; Coliseum, Leeds; Dome, Brighton; Palace Theatre, Tottenham; Hamilton Hall, Great Eastern Railway Hotel [Liverpool Street]; Plait Hall, Luton; Massey Music Hall [with the Mendelssohn Choir of Toronto and the Thomas Theodore Orchestra, which later became the Chicago Symphony Orchestra: this concert was not conducted by Henry Wood]; Co-operative Hall, Darwen; Hippodrome, Exeter; Market Hall, Redhill; Winter Gardens and Pier, Bournemouth; Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool; Kinnaird Hall, Dundee; Town Hall, Newcastle; Drill Hall, Kendal.
In addition, there are programmes from the following series or organisations, where the venue is not specified: Liverpool Philharmonic Society (1910, 1911, 1912); Cardiff Orchestral Society (1912); Newcastle and Gateshead Choral Union (1908); Hanley Glee and Madrigal Society (1907, 1908); Avenue Lectures, Southampton (1908); Birmingham City Choral Society (1906).
The programmes are from orchestral or choral concerts, usually conducted by Henry Wood. The programmes represent a variety of performing groups, though a significant number concerts were given by the Queen’s Hall Orchestra.
The programmes have been organised by a number of different concert organisers, as part of a variety of different concert series or musical festivals. However, the collection contains a significant number of programmes from concerts organised by the Sheffield Amateur Musical Society, which often took place in the Albert Hall [Sheffield]. In addition, there are a number of programmes from the Westmoreland Musical Festival - based in Kendal, and often taking place in the Drill Hall - and a number from the series "Birmingham Orchestral Concerts".
The majority of programmes contain programme notes; some programmes include analytical notes with musical examples.
