Collection Summary

Collection Title
Bradford Subscription Concerts (1927-1958)
Description
A collection of programmes from Bradford Subscription Concerts, 1927 to 1958. There are 11 volumes, spanning the periods 1927-1935, 1947-1950 and 1954-1958. The programmes contain analytical programme notes and musical examples.

Concert venues are not listed on programmes for 1927-1935. Concerts took place in Eastbrook Hall (1947-1950) and St. George’s Hall (1954-1957).

The programmes cover a variety of concert types. The early parts of the collection include a mixture of recitals, orchestral and chamber concert programmes. The programmes from the 1940s and 1950s are predominantly from orchestral concerts, with one or occasionally two solo recitals per season.

Orchestral concerts were largely given by the Hallé Orchestra. Other orchestras are predominant in the 1940s programmes: these include the New London Orchestra, BBC Northern Orchestra, Boyd Neel Orchestra, City of Birmingham Orchestra and Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra. A variety of conductors are represented in the collection; Hamilton Harty was particularly prolific in the 1920s and 1930s, and John Barbirolli in the 1950s.

The structure of the concert season varies in the collection. The concerts usually took place from October to March, and frequently took place on Fridays (1927-1935) and alternate Fridays and Saturdays (1940s, 1950s). The amount of programmes per season varies: the collection contains six programmes per season for the period 1927-1935, but usually at least twelve programmes from the 1940s and 1950s.
