Collection Summary

Collection Title
BBC Concerts (1948-1949)
Description
A collection of 22 programmes from concerts organised by the BBC, from 1948 to 1949. Some programmes contain analytical programme notes, which occasionally use musical examples.

The majority of programmes are from concerts given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. There are programmes from the Royal Albert Hall, which include concerts organised by the Royal Philharmonic Society and the Henry Wood Concert Society. The collection contains a number of provincial programmes, from the following venues: Usher Hall, Edinburgh (as part of the Edinburgh Festival); Albert Hall, Nottingham; De Montford Hall, Leicester; Truro Cathedral; Royal Cinema, Plymouth; Winter Gardens, Bournemouth.

There is one programme from a concert given by the BBC Theatre Orchestra, conducted by Walter Goehr. This took place in White Rock Pavilion, Hastings. There is one programme from a BBC Chamber Concert, which took place in the Concert Hall, Broadcasting House.

This collection is an almost exact duplicate of another Royal College of Music collection; however this collection has an extra BBC Symphony Orchestra Programme from the Royal Albert Hall, on 8/8/48.

Arrangement:
The BBCSO programmes are divided into Royal Albert Hall then provincial programmes: these are both loosely arranged chronologically. Non-BBCSO programmes are at the end of the sequence.

The latter houses a diverse collection relating to the history of performance including the RCM’s internationally famous collection of images, comprising 340 original portraits and sculptures and 25,000 prints and photographs, forming the most comprehensive archive of likenesses of musicians in the UK. The collection of 600,000 concert programmes from 1720 to the present day is of major importance for research into the history of music, society and culture.
