Collection Summary
Collection Title
BBC Concerts (1947-1948)
Description
A collection of 25 programmes from concerts organised by the BBC, from 1947 to 1948. Some programmes contain analytical programme notes, which occasionally use musical examples.
The majority of programmes are from concerts given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra. The venue for these concerts was predominantly the Royal Albert Hall, but the collection also contains a number of provincial – or Outer London -programmes. These concerts were conducted by Adrian Boult, and are from the following venues: Assembly Hall, Walthamstow; The Dome, Brighton; Guildhall, Cambridge (as part of the Cambridge Music Festival); City Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne; Central Hall, Newport; Pavilion, Bath; Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford; Civic Hall, Wolverhampton; Victoria Hall, Hanley. One programme from the Royal Albert Hall is from a jubilee concert: this includes performances by the BBC Singers, BBC Northern Orchestra and BBC Scottish Orchestra. Other programmes within the collection occasionally feature performances by the following groups: BBC Women’s Chorus, BBC Singers and BBC Choral Society. In addition, a few programmes in the collection are from concerts organised by the Royal Philharmonic Society.
The collection also includes a leaflet from the Brahms-Schubert commemoration, organised by the BBC. This took place at Central Hall, Westminster.
Arrangement:
The programmes are divided into two chronological sequences: Royal Albert Hall, then provincial concerts. The Central Hall programme is at the end of the collection.
